Saskatoon is Canada’s most dangerous city according to Maclean’s.

Regina is all the way down to number 3. For all the “per capita” apologists, the safest cities in Canada are Smaller than Saskatoon/Regina. And Saskatoon/Regina Consistently are the most dangerous, violent, etc. by various methods in subsequent years. Saskatchewan is typically most violent, crime ridden etc. across one million people year in and year out. Of course we’ll hear “at least we don’t live in Toronto”… well Toronto has the 29 th place ranking out of 100 cities. Toronto’s suburbs, ie Caledon is the SAFEST place in all of Canada to live. Only reason not to live in Toronto is the Leafs.
Stats don’t lie, but MacLean’s still put a “spin” on the numbers:
– From what I understand, they rank “petty” crimes the same as assaults and homicides;
– “Dangerous” is an adjective added by MacLean’s, not Stats Canada.
I look forward to the day when the stats improve, which will take one more weapon away from Saskatchewan-bashers.
“Danger” may have been a Maclean’s descriptor, however, Statistics Canada had previously had Saskatoon as #1 in violent crime for BOTH 2006 and 2007, with Regina in #2 each year. This is not an isolated event. Saskatoon has previously led Canada in sexual assault, murder and continues to lead in robbery. These are big crimes. I am unsure of the specifics of the rating for “dangerous” crimes, though it is some graduated scale. It seems year after year, across one million people, Saskatchewan leads Canada in violent crime as well. Leading Canada in violent crime over a decade, with a population of one million people, it is tough to blame that on a bad year, or Maclean’s methods.
Here is thebench.ca link from the initial Stats Canada data.

Read the comments, all the way back on January 21, 2009, thebench called Saskatoon Canada’s most violent city
Leading Canada in Total Violent Crime @ 1,612 / 100,000, way above everywhere, save for Regina
Also, in 2007, leading Canada in both Murder and Robbery
This is not new.
This is not explained by “property” crimes.
Saskatoon leads in Big League Violent Crimes. Thebench didn’t even cover the total crime rate, as we too feel “petty” crimes aren’t a big deal.
But leading Canada in violent crime for two straight years? by a lot? (posted below comment from above bench link)
“2007 Number, Violent Crimes (Rape, Robbery, Assault, Murder, etc)
Saskatoon 1,612 / 100,000
Regina 1,478 /100,000
Winnipeg 1,082 /100,000
Edmonton 1,031 /100,000
Vancouver 989 /100,000
Calgary 712 /100,000
AND Saskatoon led in both murder AND robbery 272 /100,000 (ie over 500) the two singled out types of violent crime
